Swim Smart, Neutralize Chlorine Naturally

Did you know?

  • Chlorine and iodine compete for the same receptors in the thyroid gland.

  • This competition can affect the uptake of iodine, which is crucial for thyroid hormone production.

  • Therefore, exposure to chlorine could potentially interfere with thyroid hormone production, especially for those already prone to thyroid imbalance.

  • Every summer we see children with hair loss and increased allergies from pool days.

While chlorine is necessary to kill harmful bacteria in pool water, we see it disrupt thyroid function especially in children, it can be harsh on the skin and lungs while contributing to our overall toxic load. Whether you're a daily lap swimmer or just love an occasional dip in the pool, chlorine can leave behind some unwanted symptoms:

  • Dry, itchy skin

  • Increase in allergies/congestion/cough

  • Brittle, damaged hair

  • Irritated eyes and that lingering “pool smell”

  • AND Most Importantly— it can even disrupt your thyroid!

Have no fear, Vitamin C is here!

  • The good news is, there is a simple yet effective solution to help with the chlorine problem, so you and your kiddos can still enjoy all the fun that comes with summer pool days.

  • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a powerful antioxidant that can neutralize chlorine when applied topically – and it’s gentle, inexpensive, and even kid-safe!

     DIY Vitamin C Spray Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of distilled water

  • 1 teaspoon of Vitamin C powder

  • 1 amber glass spray bottle

Directions:

  • Dissolve 1 teaspoon of Vitamin C powder in 1 cup of distilled water. Stir well until the powder is completely dissolved.

  • Pour solution into a brown glass spray bottle

    • **Vitamin C can degrade plastic, so glass is recommended

    • **Brown glass helps protect the solution from light, which helps it last longer

How to Use:

  • Before Swimming: Rinse off in the shower. Pat yourself dry. Appy Vitamin C Spray liberally all over skin, avoiding the eyes.

  • After Swimming: Rinse off with fresh water. Spray the solution all over the skin again. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before patting dry.

***Store the solution in a cool, dark place. Shake well before use. The solution remains effective for 1-2 weeks after making, if stored properly.***
